How to Design a Modern Farmhouse

21st Nov 2022

Modern farmhouse takes the classic farmhouse style, with its vintage furniture and traditional patterns, and adds in modern touches.

The style embraces all things rustic country but is seen as more minimalist and industrial. Modern farmhouse is about putting a present-day spin on country design.

We’re up to our fourth design style this month, Redecorator, and we certainly hope you’ve been following along and trying them out in the Season Pass challenges! Remember, it’s not too late to get all the benefits that come with the fantastic Season Pass at Redecor.

Our last design style of the Season is a modern farmhouse. This style is continuing to soar in popularity and we also can’t get enough of it. If you want your home to exude coziness with hints of traditionalism while also remaining quite modern, you’ll want to bring this style into your home.

What is modern farmhouse design?

Modern farmhouse takes the classic farmhouse style, with its vintage furniture and traditional patterns, and adds in modern touches. The style embraces all things rustic country but is seen as more minimalist and industrial. Modern farmhouse is about putting a present-day spin on country design.

One thing is for sure about this style- it emphasizes comfort and warmth. A modern farmhouse is one where you’ll want to curl up on the couch next to a fireplace. And don’t forget to bring a book!

What are the important elements of modern farmhouse design?

Reclaimed wood is a key element

If you walk into a modern farmhouse home, you’re bound to see some reclaimed wood. Reclaimed wood is upcycled wood from sources like old barns, storage crates or other places. It’s sustainable and environmentally friendly, and also has so much character, perfect for bringing in that rustic look that you’re going for. These items can be pricey, so feel free to DIY your old coffee table to get that oh-so-desired distressed look.

Go neutral

Modern farmhouse colors are neutral and cozy. Whites, beiges, greys and creams are all welcome in this design style. You can definitely bring in some color with accessories and accents, but keep them light and neutral with hues of sage, light pink and yellow. Since the style is modern, black industrial accents can be used, as well. We love a good black metal bed to make a statement. Or a beautiful black metal lighting fixture.

Bring in lots of textures

Since the colors in this style are mainly neutral, you’ll want to bring in lots of different textures to add depth and warmth. Textured wall art, throw pillows, curtains and furniture are all opportunities to incorporate different textures. We invite you to combine fabrics like cotton, canvas and wool to get the modern farmhouse look. And of course, now is the time to combine metal and wood, and to bring in organic materials.

Don’t get too literal

The key word in this style is farmhouse, but you don’t want to go too overboard and make your home theme-y. Have fun, of course, but you probably won’t want to bring in huge barn doors, farm animal figurines, and lots of vintage signage. A few farmhouse elements, like painted mason jars and hand-woven baskets are entirely welcome, but you’ll want to make sure the modern elements are in there as well, and that you haven’t converted your home into a real-looking farmhouse!

We adore this style because while it has classic traditional elements, it also is modern enough to stand the test of time in your home. We welcome you to try out this design style in your home, but also in Redecor’s Season Pass challenges! We’re certain you’ll get some inspiration.
